The Spanish may have erected a light here in the late 16th century.  The first established by the Florida government was erected in 1824 lit by a series of Winslow Lewis lamps with reflectors.  In 1855, a fourth order Fresnel lens was installed, then a first order in 1874 burning lard oil.
