Rose Island Lighthouse, near

Jamestown,

RI

The Rose Island lighthouse was built in 1870, and is located on Rose Island in Narragansett Bay near the Newport Bridge between Newport and Jamestown. It was discontinued in 1970 soon after the Bridge was completed. It has been restored and is currently a private aid to navigation as well as being run as a guest house by the Rose Island Lighthouse Foundation. Visitors are able to stay and spend a week as the "keeper". In the photograph it looks very close to the land behind it, but in fact it is located roughly centrally between Newport and Conanicut Island; about 1.6 km (one mile) from each!
