Located on the Sydney waterfront, this is believed to be the largest violin in the world. Click the image to see a couple of slightly different views taken on different trips, at different times of the day.

St. George’s Anglican Church was built between 1785 & 1791 by British army engineers sat about the same time that Sydney was founded as the capital of Cape Breton. The current building retains little of the original having been modified and rebuilt a number of times over the years. Click the image for a comprehensive history. Opens on a new page.

In 1873, the church's wooden tower was destroyed during a gale. It was replaced by the current stone tower in 1888.

The Church of the Sacred Heart in Sydney; a former Roman Catholic Church that closed its doors in June 2014, and is no longer being used for services.

Completed in May of 1904, the Lyceum on George Street houses the Cape Breton Centre for Heritage and Science. The museum focuses on the social & natural history of Cape Breton.

The Bank of Montreal building in downtown Sydney designed by the architect Sir Andrew Taylor. Completed in 1901 it is built from sandstone with a domed roof in copper.

A sculpture by William Ernest Brown entitled “Land of Our Own”. It represents the many immigrants who came to Cape Breton. It is close to the dock where we arrived, and was placed here quite recently in 2012.

I have no idea what this was for, or what was going on inside!

St. Patrick’s was originally built as a Roman Catholic Church in 1828. As the population, and hence the congregation, increased, a balcony was added in 1850. By 1874, the much larger Sacred Heart church had been built. From 1912 to 1949, St. Patrick's was used by local Lebanese immigrants, and then until the early 1960s by the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Restoration started in 1966 and it is now a museum.

This lion once stood on the roof of the Royal Bank of Canada building in Sydney. It was moved to this park site near the port on Esplanade at the junction with York Street.

Cossit House Museum. Cossit House is one of the oldest buildings in Sydney having been built in 1787. The original owners were the Reverend Ranna Cossit, and his wife Thankful. It is now a museum depicting Sydney in the 18th century.

St. Alphonsus Church Known as “the Stone Church”. in Victoria Mines, NS. Constructed in 1916, the Diocese of Antigonish closed it in 2007 as it would cost over $600,000 to restore. Local groups are hoping to buy and restore it. Click the image for more information; opens on a new page.
