Qaqortoq, Greenland

From the very first view of the town, it is obviously much larger than Nanortalik, our previous port of call in Greenland.

On dry land, at last, here are a few pictures across the harbor.

A shy duck? Whoever heard of such a thing?

Tamat, a clothing store. Known, apparently, for their anti-fly head nets that cost 28 Danish Krone (less than $5).

Fancy a game of billiards or a bit of karaoke; perhaps a spin around the dance floor? This is the place. I am not even mentioning the volkswagen (I think). Changed hands after this was taken. See the next picture.

Another commemorative anchor for those lost at sea.

The blue building is Bruseneeraq, a small supermarket where we bought the best Danish pastries we had ever eaten. Exquisite!

A stone heart; not a heart of stone!

Starting to head back into town.

Situated in the colonial harbor district of Qaqortoq, The Lutheran Church of Our Savior was built and consecrated in 1832.

It was the only church in Qaqortoq up until 1973 when the Gertrud Rasch's Church was built.

Built around 1871, this is one of the oldest houses in Qaqortoq. Originally a blacksmith's workshop, it now houses the Muku & Aja Shops.

The cannon next to the house in the previous picture. It is, apparently, aimed at the the old town square or Torvet. I could find nomore information about it.

Completed in 1932, Mindebrønden is the oldest fountain in Greenland. There are four whales on top of the fountain spouting water from their blowholes.

Local boys often catch salmon under this bridge in the center of town.

Now for some pictures of flowers to show that Greenland is not desolate everywhere.

Lastly, this boot, representing Inuit heritage, sits outside Hotel Qaqortoq.
