Bennington, VT

A delightful town in the southern part of Vermont, Bennington's population is around 16,000, but it is still one of the largest towns or cities in the state.

The Blue Benn Diner was made by the Paterson Vehicle Company, or Silk City design as it was also known, in Paterson, NJ in the 1940s. It was shipped to its present site in Bennington in 1948 and never moved.

The interior is finished in classic aqua-blue and black with plenty of chrome, and the booths have small, individual juke boxes; two songs for a quarter. The current owners bought the place in 1973, and do a roaring trade. Luckily, we went when it was not too crowded as the line often stretches out to the street. Great food, good prices and great service.

North Bennington Station, dating from 1888, and now wonderfully restored. I believe that there are plans to re-start passenger services into the station, but no date has been set.

Bennington is home to the Bennington Battle Monument, a 93 meter (306 foot) stone obelisk which is the tallest structure in the state of Vermont. Built between 1887 and 1889, it commemorates the Battle of Bennington in 1777.

The figure in front of the obelisk is Colonel Seth Warner, a hero of the battle of Bennington.
