The familiar near side of the Moon that we always see from the Earth.

The far side of the Moon that we never see from the Earth. The dark area at the bottom of the image is the South Pole-Aitken basin, which is the largest crater known in the Solar System.

Mare Imbrium is in the foreground, while the Copernicus Crater (click image for another view) is at center near the horizon. The large crater near the center is Pytheas. You can see the Montes Carpatus mountains at the upper edge of the Mare Imbrium. The distance from the lower edge of the image to the center of Copernicus is about 250 miles (400 km). Credit: NASA.
