Somesville, Mount Desert Island, Maine

The Selectmen's Hut on the left, the Thaddeus Shepley Somes Memorial Bridge and the Somesville Museum.

The first settlers on Mount Desert Island were Abraham Somes, his wife, and the Richardson family. They established the village of Somesville around 1761. It is the oldest settlement on Mount Desert Island. John Somes, Abraham's son, built the Selectmen's Building in the 1780s. On the right is the museum.

Built in 1981, the Thaddeus Shepley Somes Memorial Bridge is named for a descendant of Abraham Somes.

Prior to Somes, in 1604, Samuel de Champlain, a French Explorer, spent a winter in Otter Cove after his ship was damaged.

Constructed in 1981, Somesville Museum overlooks a mill pond, which is the outlet from Somes Pond, with Somes Harbor beyond.

Around the Museum, there is an Heirloom Garden featuring plants of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Long before Europeans arrived, Native Americans sailed over from the mainland to Mount Desert Island to fish.
