Butler Flats Lighthouse

Butler Flats Lighthouse, New Bedford, MA

The Butler Flats Light was built in 1898. It replaced the Clark's Point Light.

Originally painted red, It was painted white in 1899.

The office and living space are in the upper cylinder, which is about 18 feet in diameter. It sits on the cylindrical base which is some 35 feet in diameter.

The optic comprised a rare flashing fifth order Fresnel lens with a kerosene light.

In 1978, the lighthouse was automated using an early solar powered light.

Today, the light is powered using a cable from the shore.

The lighthouse is located on the mouth of the Acushnet River in the New Bedford outer harbor.

I know it could do with a coat of paint, but it remains a handsome structure!
