Here is a series of views of the Cape Neddick Lighthouse, or "The Nubble", as it is also known.

The lighthouse is the original 41 foot (~12.5 meters) tall tower built in 1879, though recommendations for a lighthouse here date back to 1807, with a number of proposals rejected in the intervening years.

The tower is constructed from cast iron, and lined with bricks. It was electrified in 1938, and automated in 1987.

After having been damaged in an exlosion, the fourth-order Fresnel Lens was replaced with another from a different lighthouse in 1928, and this remains in use today, not having been upgraded with an aerobeacon. It retains most of its original features including a plaque showing that F. Barbier made it in Paris in 1891.

The lighthouse is actually about 90 meters (100 yards) off the mainland on Nubble Island.

It is not possible to visit the lighthouse, but good views are available from Cape Neddick Point, which is at the north end of Long Sands Beach in the village of York Beach.

A postcard dating from the 1920s. It shows the white, pyramid shaped bell tower that replaced the original skeletal tower in 1911. This tower was removed in 1961.
