A beacon was established here in 1745 during King George’s War. It was used to warn of possible naval attack using a smoke signal {day) or a fire (night). The beacon was destroyed in 1781 by a storm. A true lighthouse was built in 1806/7. By 1855, erosion of the site necessitated moving the lighthouse, back, so a new lighthouse was completed in 1856. Essentially, this is the current structure.
