Machias Area, ME

Jasper Beach, in Machiasport, is a half mile stretch of stony sea shore.

Despite the name, there is very little jasper on the beach. In fact most of the stones comprise a volcanic rock called rhyolite, that has a dark redish hue similar to jasper.

Built in 1955, this was the 907th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron (AC&W Sq). It was deactivated on 30 June 1979. Today the site is part of the Joint Surveillance System. The surrounding area is now owned by the State of Maine, and is part of the Down East Corrections Department.
