Chemung County is located in the southern tier of New York State. Originally a part of Tioga County, it was created as a separate county in 1836. In 1854, it was reduced in size by 280 square km (110 sq. miles) to create Schuyler County, reducing its area to 1,100 sq. km (410 sq. miles).
The City of Elmira is the largest city in the county, and is the county seat.
