Atlantic Cruise - Red Bay Slide Show

At sea, heading towards Red Bay.

Our first glimpse of Red Bay in the distance.

As we arrived, Red Bay looked very small!

Just arrived on land. Taking a stroll along the coast.

Basque whalers operated from Saddle Island in Red Bay during the sixteenth century until there were very few whales left. Then, in the eighteenth century, it became a Canadian fur trading post. In 1951, the octagonal lighthouse was replaced by a steel frame tower that can be seen in the photo.

There is no deep water dock in Red Bay, so we had to tender from ship to shore. This is the jetty where the tenders docked.

Penney Island was another base used by Basque whalers from the mid-sixteenth to early 17th centuries. This was an abandoned series of buildings on the island. We visited again some years later to see the buildings virtually unchanged.

As we were heading up to the local graveyard, the mist descended giving us a slightly ghostly look.
