Torshavn, Faroe Islands

At sea on our way from Bergen in Norway to Torshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands.

Torshavn spread out before us.

Skansin Lighthouse above the Skansin fortress. The lighthouse dates to 1888, while the fortress was built in 1580 by Magnus Heinason as protection from roving pirates.

From the commercial docks, we are now beside the marina.

The marina with some of the historic buildings in the Tinganes district.

Statue of Nólsoyar Páll, who is a national hero in the Faroe Islands. On his way sailing home from England, he went missing in the Winter of 1808.

"Tradarmadurin"; a 1989 bronze sculpture by Hans Pauli Olsen. He is a Faroese sculptor now based in Denmark.

"Káta Hornið", which also means "happy corner" in Faroese. I have yet to determine anything more.

Torshavn Cathedral dates from 1788, and was substantially rebuilt in 1865, while preserving most of the major structure. Dating from 1708, the bell is said to have come from the ship "Norske Löve" (the Norwegian Lion), which sank in 1707. Thanks to Matthew Ross for this pic.

Looking across Vestaravag harbor. Click the image to see a closeup of the pyramid shaped copper spire of the Vesturkirkjan (the West Church). Built in 1975, it is the tallest church in the Faroe Islands.
