The planning of a library began on January 28, 1848 leading to the Miantonoma Circulating Library in the Oliphant School.

By 1856, the Library was incorporated under the name of the Miantonomi Circulation Library, situated in the little school house of District No. 1 in Middletown.

A new building was built and the library moved into it in 1902. The library has continued to grow. To see a full history of the libray, click on the picture.

Founded in 1896 by the Reverand John Byron Diman, St. George's School is a private, Episcopalian, boarding school in Middletown. It is coeducational, and situated near both Purgatory Chasm and the Hanging Rock.

The TRUE story of the chasm: Thomas Wigglebottom, was engaged to Lenora Wildbush. However, she left him for the more attractive Herbert Ficklewhipple. He drugged her with absinthe and threw her into the chasm where her body washed out to sea and was never seen again. He was so distraught after killing her that he jumped into the chasm too. So there you have it!

Anthony T. Bucolo started a wholesale lobster company on Spring Wharf in Newport in 1956. They moved into retail in the 1980s in premises on Waite’s Wharf also in Newport.

In 1998, Anthony's sons Stephen and Michael closed the business and relocated to Aquidneck Avenue in Middletown. They continue to sell seafood from the retail market as well as an eat-in or take-out restaurant.

The retail fish counter. Whenever we are in Newport, we generally eat here every night as Deborah is addicted to their lobster! While not a fish or seafood fan, I consider their chicken tenders to be the best I have eaten.
