Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge, Middletown, RI

As the sign says, this is the Visitors Center for the Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge.

In 2012, Hurricane Sandy damaged the visitors center severely and it did not reopen until May 2013.

Looking across Sachuest Bay at the tower of St George's School, perhaps appropriately siuated on Purgatory Road in Middletown!

In 1970, the Audubon Society of Rhode Island donated 70-acres to set up the Refuge. The Navy also transfered land so the the refuge now encompasses 242 acres.

The various different habitats in the refuge support more than 200 different species of bird. There are several viewing platforms along the 4 km (2.5 miles) of nature trails.
