Delaware
Introduction
Visit:
Delaware gets its name from the Delaware River that was named after its first English colonial governor, Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr. After Rhode Island, it is the smallest state, but one of the most densely populated, though the population is barely one million. New Castle, the northern most county, is fairly urbanized while the lower two counties are predominantly agricultural. Wilmington is the largest city in the state, while Dover, the state capital, is the second largest.
Established in 1631 by Dutch traders, Delaware was one of the thirteen states to declare independence from Great Britain in 1776.
