New York State
The county, named after James Madison, who was the fourth president of the United States, was first formed in 1806.  Madison County is in central New York State, east of Syracuse, north of Binghamton, and west of Albany. It is now part of the Syracuse metropolitan area, and its county seat is Wampsville. 

Chenango County is to the south of Madison County, with Onondaga and Cortland counties to the west.  Otsego County is located to the southeast with Oneida County to the northeast.
