Schoharie County

New York State
Schoharie County is the next county west from Albany County, and the county seat is, also, Schoharie. Note that the "har" in Schoharie is not pronounced as in "hard", but as if it was "hair", with the emphasis on that syllable.
On the day we visited the area around North Blenheim the Blenheim-Gilboa Pumped Storage Power Project held an open day. It looked a lot of fun, so we joined in. Part of the New York Power Authority, the project is a pumped-storage hydroelectricity plant used in case of emergencies in New York City; for example, if another power plant fails. It was great fun, and we also took in the Lansing Manor House. John Lansing, Jr. built the house in 1819 for his daughter and her husband. The New York Power Authority restored the house in 1977, and added period furnishings. It is a really interesting house to visit.
The main purpose of the Gilboa Museum is to protect the amazing Gilboa Fossils that date back to the Devonian Period, and to promote the culture of the area around Gilboa. You can see videos about the fossils with historical displays about the town of Gilboa, & the surrounding area. The fossils are believed to represent the oldest forest ever found in the world.
To quote the Iroquois Museum, "The Iroquois Museum is an educational institution dedicated to fostering understanding of Iroquois culture using Iroquois art as a window to that culture. The Museum is a venue for promoting Iroquois art and artists, and a meeting place for all peoples to celebrate Iroquois culture and diversity. As an anthropological institution, it is informed by research on archaeology, history, and the common creative spirit of modern artists and craftspeople." While the building in which the museum is housed is modern, it is designed to evoke images of traditional Iroquois elm bark longhouses that were used in the area around 400 years ago.
